Expert Advice for Layering Scents | YSL Beauty

In the quest for a signature scent, it can be difficult to land on a fragrance that truly encapsulates the uniqueness of you. So, rather than ascribing that responsibility to a single fragrance, why not try perfume layering?

Layering scents allows you to experiment with perfume notes and intensities to craft a personalised olfactory profile that can be richer and more complex than a solitary fragrance.

To guide you in your custom creation, we’ve compiled four of our favourite perfume layering combinations and application advice to help preserve the longevity of your layered scents.

What is perfume layering?

Before we delve into our favourite perfume layering combinations, it’s worth keeping a few cardinal rules in mind for a harmonious scent match.

1. Layer similar or complementary scent profiles to avoid a fragrance clash.
2. Always start with your heavier fragrance, then layer your lighter scent on top.
3. Make sure your skin is well-moisturised to help your perfume last longer.
We’ll expand on these layering tips below.

How to master perfume layering: 3 strategies

Before we delve into our favourite perfume layering combinations, it’s worth keeping a few cardinal rules in mind for a harmonious scent match.

1. Layer similar or complementary scent profiles to avoid a fragrance clash.
2. Always start with your heavier fragrance, then layer your lighter scent on top.
3. Make sure your skin is well-moisturised to help your perfume last longer.

We’ll expand on these layering tips below.

1. Choose scents that complement each other

Layering scents involves choosing either similarly scented perfumes or perfumes with complementary profiles.

For instance, fresh and floral perfume layering gives the aroma of a vibrant bouquet; whereas woody fragrances naturally complement amber scents because they share a similar depth of warm notes. However, even fragrance families you might not initially put together – like fresh and woody – can still complement one another, pairing light aromatics with earthy undertones.

Of course, there is a large amount of trial and error as you find your signature combination, but the fun is in the experimentation!

2. Layer the lighter scent on top

When perfume layering, it’s best to start with a heavy scent to avoid overwhelming the lighter scent profile.

Before scent stacking, identify which of your fragrances is an EDP and which is an EDT.

• An eau de parfum (EDP) has a higher oil concentration and lasts up to eight hours on the skin.
• An eau de toilette (EDT) has a lower oil concentration and lasts up to five hours on the skin.

In that same vein, start with your richer scents – your amber and wood fragrances – to give your layered profile a strong foundation. Lighter scents – florals and fresh fragrances – can then be layered on top without getting overpowered.

3. Ensure your skin is well-hydrated

Fragrances cling better to well-hydrated skin.

Moisturiser acts as a sort of ‘primer’ for your perfume to help extend the longevity of your layered scents. If the skin is dry or dehydrated, it may cause your scents to evaporate faster.

• If you are layering multiple perfumes, we recommend moisturising with an unscented body moisturiser to help bind your fragrances to the skin.
• If you are layering a body moisturiser with a fragrance, be sure to choose either a complementary moisturiser or a scented moisturiser within the same perfume collection.

YSL's perfume layering combinations

Scent stacking is all about revealing the hidden depths of a fragrance and creating an olfactory profile that’s personal to you.
If you’re overwhelmed by choice and not sure where to begin, we’ve curated our favourite YSL scent pairings to inspire your next perfume layering combination.

Cuir Eau De Parfum and Black Opium Le Parfum: leather with a vanilla overlay

Rich scents are a natural fit for perfume layering, and we love blending the signature smoky notes of a leather-based scent like Black Opium Le Parfum’s creamy coffee accord.

The vanilla base notes in Black Opium Le Parfum add a creamy twist to Cuir Eau De Parfum’s intense oud leather profile that’s perfect for chilly winter evenings by the fire – or an indulgent night out.

Start with a spritz of Cuir Eau De Parfum and let the scent dry down before following with Black Opium Le Parfum.

Black Opium Eau De Parfum and Mon Paris Eau De Parfum: a rich floral affair

Floral fragrances naturally complement one another, but the beauty of perfume layering lies in adding complexity to your scent. We recommend layering a traditionally floral fragrance over a heady floral-amber fragrance for a multi-dimensional scent.

To achieve this opulent floral perfume layering combination, we can think of no two better fragrances than YSL’s iconic Black Opium Eau De Parfum and Mon Paris Eau De Parfum. Black Opium Eau De Parfum’s rich coffee vanilla floral accord adds depth to Mon Paris Eau De Parfum’s sparkling fruity-floral bouquet, culminating in a sensual floral fragrance with an addictive trail.

Since Black Opium Eau De Parfum is a warmer scent, start with this one first, before following with Mon Paris Eau De Parfum, which has lighter, brighter notes. You can either layer directly on top of one another or spritz onto the surrounding skin.

MYSLF L'Absolu and Y Eau De Toilette: fresh and grounded

Wood and fresh scents are an exceptionally balanced, harmonious perfume layering combination. Sparkling citrus or aquatic notes uplift woody base notes, while warm woods help anchor fleeting fresh notes.

You can capture this fresh and warm contrast with MYSLF L'Absolu and Y Eau De Toilette. Begin with MYSLF L'Absolu to give your bespoke fragrance a dense, spicy base – then mist Y Eau De Toilette over the top for fresh citrus trail.

Libre Intense Eau De Parfum and Libre L'Eau Nue Parfum De Peau: warm amber with a citrus twist

We’d be remiss not to highlight YSL’s inimitable Libre scent profile amongst our best perfume layering combinations. Because, as far as fragrance pairings go, Libre Intense Eau De Parfum and Libre L'Eau Nue Parfum De Peau fit together seamlessly.

Both grounded in the same Libre DNA – a signature blend of Moroccan orange blossom and French lavender – Libre Intense Eau De Parfum has a warm vanilla amber base that is brightened by Libre L'eau Nue Parfum De Peau’s radiant citrus notes.

Like other scent pairings, we suggest layering the warmer of the two fragrances (Libre Intense Eau De Parfum) first, before applying the airier scent. These varying intensities will add dimension to your Libre scent stacking ritual.

To get the most out of your perfume layering routine, it’s important to keep your fragrances in optimal condition. Next, explore our essential guide to perfume storage to maintain the shelf life of your favourite scents.
