THE OURIKA GARDENS

Follow in the footsteps of Yves Saint Laurent to the Moroccan Atlas Mountains

AN OASIS OF BEAUTY

It started in the untouched landscape of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, known for its extreme conditions. There, YSL Beauty created the exceptional Ourika Gardens. In a collaboration between dry landscape designers and a cooperative of 32 local women, botanicals have been grown there since 2013, and their potent efficiency infused into YSL Beauty products. The gardens are divided into three distinct areas. The first is composed of 64 square plots for growing plants that will be incorporated into YSL Beauty products. In addition to the famous saffron pistils used in the Or Rouge skincare range, walnut leaf is used in Top Secrets skincare, pomegranate in Rouge Volupté Shine, and marigold in Touche Éclat. A second space – called the “botanical area”  – is an experimental area for testing new ingredients. Finally, a “legacy” space pays tribute to Yves Saint Laurent and his passion for flowers. It includes a dozen plants and flowers such as wheat, hibiscus, and lilies.

A VIBRANT HERITAGE, A POSITIVE FUTURE

Yves Saint Laurent first discovered Morocco in 1966, at the age of 33. It was an aesthetic revelation: he fell in love with this light-bathed country, its vibrant colours and its way of life – a true contrast to the Parisian bustle. The effect was so powerful, the designer had a sudden and strong intuition that this country would be his refuge, his paradise found and an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Today within the Ourika Gardens, YSL Beauty has supported a cooperative of 32 women, charged to champion their artisanal knowledge and acquire new skills that support their financial independence. In just three years, this unique community has doubled its revenue and promoted women’s empowerment in the region – a legacy fitting of Yves Saint Laurent himself.

INSPIRATION FROM MOROCCO

EMPOWERMENT FOR WOMEN

INGREDIENTS THAT INSPIRE ICONS

The Ourika Gardens have become a source of inspiration for the creation of YSL's makeup, skincare and fragrances. By creating and supporting gardens for the growth of ingredients, with a space entirely dedicated to botanical research, YSL Beauty has adopted an innovative, socially responsible approach that has produced some truly iconic beauty products – of which more than 5.5 million have been sold since 2015. 2013 saw the first saffron harvested to launch Or Rouge skincare. In 2016, calendula, more commonly known a marigold, and walnut leaves began to be harvested for Touche Éclat and Top Secrets. Pomegranate from the Garden was infused into Rouge Volupté Shine in 2019, and the following year saw the launch of the Pure Shots skincare, with iris, mallow, barbary fig and moonlight cactus all produced in the Ourika Gardens.
